• Description: Blade's MP3 Encoder (BladeEnc) is a freeware MP3 encoder. It is based on the same ISO compression routines as mpegEnc, so you can expect roughly the same, or better, quality. The main difference is the appearance and speed. BladeEnc doesn't have a nice, user-friendly interface like mpegEnc, but it is more than three times faster, and it works with several popular front-end graphical user interfaces.

• Description: mp3tools, despite the name, should work for all MPEG audio files. It currently includes three programs, mp3id3, mp3info and mp3index. mp3id3 lets you view and edit the ID3 tags of MPEG audio files. mp3info will tell you the MPEG version, layer, bitrate, and play length of an MPEG audio file. mp3index will generate customized indexes of your MPEG audio files. mp3index is extremely powerful and includes a nice sample format. A Perl module which lets you do anything that mp3info or mp3id3 can (since it is the brains behind those programs) is included.
