The Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP) and the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) provide a "framework for passing configuration information to hosts on a TCP/IP network" (RFC 1541 - DHCP). This means that hosts (e.g. personal computers, print servers, X terminals, etc.) don't have to be configured before they can communicate using the TCP/IP protocol suite.
