| Console |
|
Console applications are applications that are run directly from the Linux command prompt.
They do not
need the X Window system to run. These programs include, but are not limited to ftpservers,
webservers,
texteditors such as pico, vi, and joe, and even file managers like midnight commander and
pilot.

| GNOME |
|
GNOME stands for GNU Network Object Model Environment. The GNOME project intends to build a
complete,
user-friendly desktop based entirely on free software. GNOME is part of the GNU project, and
it is free
software compliant with the OpenSource(tm) definition. The desktop will consist of small
utilities and
larger applications which share a consistent look and feel. GNOME uses GTK+ as the GUI
toolkit for
all GNOME-compliant applications.   |
| KDE |
|
KDE is a powerful, highly stable graphical desktop environment for Linux/Unix workstations.
It combines
ease of use, contemporary functionality and outstanding graphical design with the
technological superiority of the Linux/Unix operating system.   |
| X11 |
|
X11 programs are designed to run under the X Window System. The X Window System is the de
facto industry
standard graphics system for UNIX machines. XFree86 is the free Linux equivalent to the very
powerful X
Window System. The X Window System allows you to run many programs at once in different
windows and even
on different desktops!   |
