Installing Themes

The desktop themes we publish here on Linuxberg are simple and easy to install on your home computer. Follow the simple steps below to install the themes you download from Linuxberg in just minutes!

If you have more helpful tips, or would like to see more information covered in this section, please let us know!

Installing under Enlightenment:

  • Change to either ~/.enlightenment/themes/ or /usr/share/enlightenment/themes/ and unpack the theme: tar zxvf theme-name.tar.gz
  • If you have e-conf installed:
  • Open up the Enlightenment Configuration Editor: e-conf & or middle click to get your menu and select Configuration.
  • Select Themes once the editor is open, then select your new theme, then press the apply button.
  • Next select Backgrounds with the Configuration Editor still open. Select the background corresponding to the new theme and press apply.
  • Note: sometimes the new background does not show up in the Configuration Editor the first time you open the editor after you install the theme, if this happens close and restart the Configuration Editor.
  • If you don't have e-conf installed:
  • Middle click to get your menu and under Themes select your new theme.
  • Note: if your theme does not show up in the list you may have to restart Enlightenment.
  • To change the background you have to use a program such as xv.
  • Change to ~/.enlightenment/themes/theme-name/pix/ or /usr/share/enlightenment/themes/theme-name/pix/.
  • Use xv to set the root window image: xv -root image.jpg -quit
  • In order to have your background stay when you restart X, add xv -root /path-to-image/image.jpg -quit to either your .xinitrc, .xsession or whichever file that you use to initialize X.

    Installing under KDE:

  • Open the KDE Theme Manager, choose Add.
  • Select the tarball you downloaded.
  • Your theme should appear in the list, select it and hit "Apply".

  • Our themes are compliant with the KDE 1.1.2 Theme Manger, but we have KDE theme conversion utilities for those of you that run 1.1.1 or lower.
  • With the conversion utilites you can convert TUCOWS Linux Themes from the 1.1.2 format to 1.1.1, or back again.

    Installing under KDE 1.1.1:

  • Install the KDE theme conversion utilities.
  • Convert the theme to 1.1.1 format using: new2old theme-name without the .tar.gz extension.
  • Change to ~/.kde and unpack the theme: tar zxvf theme-name-old.tar.gz
  • Open the KDE Control Center: kcontrol &
  • Click on "Desktop", then "Background".
  • In the newly opened window, click browse, then click on the home icon at the top, change to .kde/share/wallpapers, and pick the theme name you want to use.
  • Click on the "Colors" menu item on the left hand side and choose the theme name to use.
  • If the theme includes sounds, click on "Sounds", then "System Sounds", and configure it to your liking.

    Installing under Window Maker:

  • Change to ~/GNUstep/Library/Windowmaker and unpack the theme: tar zxvf theme-name.tar.gz
  • To view the new theme, click on your root window, choose "Appearance", "Themes", then the theme name.
  • If you do not see the theme name in the menu, restart your session, and look again.
